Day 97: Mixing Alcohol and Water

The video is a demo I did for the first question on today’s chemistry quiz:


Jump to a few days ago:

We had done a similar demo with water and sugar. The kids suggested that the water particles and sugar particles were different sizes so the smaller particles were able to fit into the spaces between the larger particles. To test their model, I repeated the demo on a larger scale by mixing 500 mL of marbes and 500 mL of plastic beads:

    I am so excited that you are doing chemistry this year Frank! I am going to steal approximately 85% of whatever you end up posting here! Did you have students come up with the model and experiment in this case? Or did you have to demo it?

    Excellent! What’s great about following this, is I actually get to see how it looks like in the class. Since I am a novice, it is so tough to envision just from reading the curriculum material.
