Day 99: How Much Excess Charge is on Scotch Tape?


When Scotch tape is stuck to the table and quickly pulled off, it becomes charged. In AP Physics today, students were challenged to determine the amount of excess charge on a piece of tape. Pictured is one possible set-up. Yes, many assumptions must be made, yet all groups got between 10 nC and 50 nC. What is even more surprising is that this means that only about 0.0001% of the atoms on the surface of the tape gain an electron!
